Here at East Coast Black Magic German Shepherds we breed for temperament and health first. We strive to produce the classic German Shepherd: naturally protective of his family, faithful, athletic, and beautiful. Our dogs are oversize and have level backs as seen in the old Wurttemberger line of German Shepherds with big bones, massive heads and tall, strong bodies.

Breeding Philosophy

East Coast Black Magic German Shepherds are bred and raised to be family dogs. They are intelligent, like to work, and can easily be trained in obedience, agility, and search and rescue.

However, we breed dogs with low drive which are not suitable for Schutzhund or attack work.  Instead, Black Magic German Shepherds are bred to be very intelligent and willing to please so they are quick to learn obedience and fun jobs like agility. They will still protect you and your family - instinctively, as every good shepherd should. But they are not bred for the high drive required for advanced protection and bite work. The biggest benefit of this is that you will have a dog that loves to play with you and take care of you, but is quiet and calm in their nature, never hyper or nervous.

 Care and Socialization

Our puppies are cherished from the moment they are conceived. All breedings are carefully planned, and the adult dogs are kept in excellent condition both mentally and physically. The resulting puppies are of the highest quality.

When we have a litter the puppies are handled constantly from the moment they are born. Every day of its life each puppy gets held and cuddled and loved. They grow up totally trusting. They get regular vet care and are well immunized and healthy when they leave to go to their new homes.

Color and Type

We breed the oversized German shepherd that most American families remember, know and love. They are tall and substantial with good bone. We breed for a level topline, not the slanted look that is popular in the show ring. East Coast Black Magic German Shepherds are considered oversize by the German Shepherd standard. Our males usually weigh between 95-120 pounds. The females range from 75-90 pounds. Wendy Lumbert's Black Magic German Shepherds started out with primarily black shepherds. However, over the years we have come to love every color - it's the dog inside that matters! We now offer puppies and grown dogs in all colors: Solid black, black and tan, black and red, sable, bi-color or bi-black, and white.

Coats are primarily short (stock coat) with the traditional shepherd undercoat. Occasionally we have a plush coat (long hair stock coat which is shorter and thicker than a long hair) puppy available. We do not breed long coats and although some of our puppies are very fluffy, they will shed out fairly short.

Health

For over 30 years we have worked to breed the very best dog possible. The pup you buy from us has been carefully planned for many preceding generations. Many of our clients have returned to buy a second dog from us when their first one died of old age at 12-14 years old.

It is absolutely impossible to breed a large number of German Shepherds and have absolutely no genetic problems. However, we have had less than 1 percent of Black Magic German Shepherds experience any health problems. That is a pretty good record, one which we are proud of.  Our adult dogs are available for you to see and touch at any time, by appointment.
